To the Prospective Teacher

Thank you for your interest in Sino-Canada High School and teaching in China. This site is designed to provide an understanding of our school in Luxu and living and working in China. It is also designed to provide a sense of the type of teacher we are looking for to join our faculty.

If you are reading this you have probably made a decision to explore teaching abroad. Living and working abroad will be different for you. Our school is a Canadian School in China. You will want to and will be expected to give the school a "Canadian touch". In other words, you bring a unique understanding of Canada and the values that are inherent in the Canadian culture. You will bring your beliefs and values as a Canadian but at the same time you must understand and be sensitive to the Chinese sense of values.  You will blend the two into a harmonious relationship during your time at Sino Canada High School.

You will be in an environment that is very different for most of you. It will be a different culture for all of you, even if some of you share a common ancestry. You will be trying your best to adapt to a new home, a new language and a new culture. You will be bringing with you a preconceived set of understandings and expectations.

For some, the first inclination will be to judge.  As a member of the Sino-Canada team you must be the type of person who must resist that urge.  You need to understand the challenge as a guest in a new environment will be to look at the country, the city, the school, as well as the people around you and try to understand where you are and why you are there.Things will be much different than what you are accustomed to; that does not make the things in Canada better or the things in China worse - they are just different.  If you come here with the attitude that you will both learn and share, then you will earn the respect of the students and the citizens of China.  If you think you have all the answers and make comparisons all the time you will have a difficult time.

People do things differently in China, but they have their reasons, and part of the learning is to question with the purpose of  understanding those reasons.

As you accept the opportunity that is afforded you, your life will be enriched beyond measure.

Please take the time to read through the site. We look forward to working with you at the Sino-Canada High School in Luxu, which is located  just West of Shanghai in the People's Republic of China.

Yours truly,
